The Instructional Technology (IT) programme prepares students to be leaders in any environment that involves the application of digital technologies in learning, including basic schools, adult training and development in business and industry, public/non-profit training, higher education, and life-long learning. As information and communication technologies (ICTs) are transforming the ways people create, disseminate, and apply knowledge, there is the need for educators to de-emphasize the practice of imparting static information and ideas to learners, and instead, develop and deploy purposeful and interactive learning experiences with the aid of these technologies, for the overall advancement of knowledge.
The Regent Instructional Technology programme therefore prepares students to work with media and computer information systems to analyse, design, develop, implement and evaluate instruction in different learning contexts. Graduates of this programme will therefore be able to design and produce pedagogically sound e-learning interventions, including multimedia CD/DVD-ROMs and web-based or online learning platforms, based on current theory and research in educational technology. The training also firmly grounds students in pedagogy and cognitive science, so they are able to deal with both present and future implications of emerging technologies, and thus better contribute in shaping the educational responses to innovations in ICTs.
The IT programme also places high priority on group work, fieldwork and internships. Schools, computer companies, businesses, and other agencies are partners in projects, providing environments, materials, personnel, or opportunities to students to plan and execute innovative projects. This further equips students with the skills to work closely with scholars, scientists, and other professionals to ensure that ICTs are appropriately leveraged to meet the education and training needs of persons who need to re-train, re-tool, and re-skill as careers change multiple times over a lifetime.
Instructional Technology is a diverse field with opportunities for individuals in a variety of eclectic roles - all centered on the process of creating effective technology enhanced learning environments. In the current digital age where the amount information created keeps growing exponentially, the need for life-long learning drives the need for instructional technologists. Graduates of the program will therefore find career opportunities in business, industry, education, government etc. where they can function as teachers, instructional designers, interactive educational game developers, information architects, training and technology coordinators, and change/process management specialists. Others can go on to further studies in a wide range of fields including business, creative arts, education, technology etc.
Programme Philosophy and Objectives
The BSc (Hons) Computer Science programme provides students with a set of practical skills, which are built on a sound understanding of the principles and theories of computer science. The programme covers hardware (the behaviour and interaction of the electronic components from which computers are constructed), software (the computer programme) and methodologies (the techniques used in the analysis and design processes for computer systems). The third and fourth years of study introduce the student to a more concentrated and advanced areas of computer science, offering students the opportunity to focus their studies in specialised areas like Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems, and Internet Computing, depending upon the students interests and career goals.
Programme Philosophy and Objectives
The BSc (Hons) Information Systems Sciences is designed primarily to meet the needs of professionals and practitioners in the ICT industry with practical knowledge in information technology and its allied fields.
The programme has both similarities and dissimilarities with the Computer Science programme. Whereas the CSc programme is geared towards those who are mathematically inclined with strong academic interests, the Information Systems Sciences programme is tilted towards those with strong professional and practical interests. The CSc programme puts emphasis on theory and foundations subjects like programming languages, data structures, graphics and visualisation, algorithms, operating systems, software engineering, modelling and simulation, numerical methods, parallel programming, automata, databases and networks, at a high level. The Information System Sciences or the Computer Information Systems emphasis management and business legacy systems (mainframes and enterprise computing ) as well as application development for windows and other operating systems (Visual C++, Java, C#, Visual Basic, spreadsheets, etc) particularly for large management information systems and database systems, as well as security issues.
This programme will be particularly useful for those who want to gain the technical knowledge to use and apply computer technologies in industry, the skills to design and manage innovative information systems, expertise in high demand areas of the computing industry, such as eCommerce and information security. This programme will be of particular interest to ICT professionals with Higher National Diploma (HND) and other certificate holders who will want a more advanced professional and technical training.
Graduates of this course could find employment across a wide spectrum of scientific careers, particularly thoseS that involve telecommunication, networking, geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing experts, web management, systems administration, information management and security, and the technical and organisational skills to convert that data into useful information. Graduates could seek employment as Information Architects, Systems Analysts, Software Architects, Computer Service Providers, Information Security Experts, Programmers, Business Information Analysts, and Business Managers.
